Art by Staci BOver a year ago, I found myself writing Haiku – the Japanese form of poetry that consists of three lines containing 5-7-5 syllables – during my spiritual practice. In sharing them with friends, I was encouraged to find a way to pass them on. My inner artist responded with glee and I began creating decorative placks, wall hangers and magnets containing the Haiku. I get incredible joy from making them and now I have a shop at Etsy where you can glimpse what I do and purchase something if it resonates with you. Where are you going |
Tired of the "when you drop some weight, I'll send you out on a real audition" blather from her agent, plus-sized actress Giletta Montrose is thrilled when she lands a gig to host a new reality show called Where Fat Girls Haven't Gone. While enjoying the show's weekly "stunts," such as kayaking around the New York Harbor, starring in a music video and playing competitive sports, Giletta learns to navigate the broad egos, intricate politics and false friendships she encounters. Ecstatic to finally be in front of the camera and no longer behind a desk, Giletta is not as surprised as everyone else when the show becomes a hit. But with success shining a light on her path, she can no longer ignore her dream to grace the boards of a Broadway stage and must choose between following her heart or her bank account. $14.95 + $5 S/H

When I couldn’t find a job after getting my journalism degree, I went back to school and got an EMT license – a pivotal choice that created the set point for my life. I caught a lot of flack for putting the employment search on hold. Some said I was impatient; others accused me of being too arrogant to start at the bottom. Many said I was afraid of rejection or not getting what I wanted. All of that was probably true to some degree, but bullheaded and curious, I continued down the path of moving on from experiences at my own pace and attempted to hide my checkerboard past behind a functional resume. I felt a lot of guilt for not being able to do what others apparently did with ease and acted in lots of self-destructive ways to |
The flipside of the guilt was that it drove me to understand why I was the way I was. I studied the religions of the world, read the great philosophers, assembled the perfect self-help library, and kept on living my life one experience at a time – always asking myself how I had participated in creating it, what I could do differently to produce results more to my liking, and identifying the beliefs that led me to where I stood. It took me many years to come undone, and when I finally did, I recognized my experiences for what they were – experiences. And I realized that it didn’t matter whether I was earning six figures or declaring bankruptcy, working with |
Evangelicals or hippies, shoveling horse manure or managing $12 million in advertising accounts – I always had everything I needed. I love sharing these stories and the lessons I’ve learned and I do it through the books I write, the art I create and talks I give. All of the gifts I’ve received have helped me to see my wholeness despite the fragmented experiences that got me here. The joy that radiates from me when I see in someone the moment of recognition as the words I speak find the truth that exists within us all is the gift I offer to anyone who wants it. |
